Course Cost: $80 — Fingerprints/Livescan is $70.00
Please note that at least half of Power to Arrest and Appropriate use of Force training must be given in-person through traditional classroom instruction.
The Security Guard Card class is state-approved. This is the basic course for you to obtain employment in the security industry. It consists of eight hours of in-person instruction and video training. The class is offered every Monday morning at 9 AM, Walk-ins are welcome pre-registration is not required.
We will assist you with completing your application forms and complete a Livescan on-site
This class will not include the mandatory (16 hours) and elective courses (16 hours) required by the
Bureau Security and Investigative Services (BSIS). For those looking for a complete solution consider our 4 WEEK SECURITY ACADEMY. Scholarships and grants are available for the Security Academy.
Powers to Arrest (PTA) – 3 Hours
Educational Objectives
To familiarize and instruct the individual on the training topics delineated at Business and Professions Code section 7583.7, including, without limitation, legal aspects, techniques, liability, and company requirements relating to the arrest of an individual. The training will utilize the Department of Consumer Affairs’ Power to Arrest Training Manual.
- Overview of Power to Arrest Manual and subject matter.
- Definition of arrest and discussion on the implications to the subject, the guard, and the company.
- Lecture/discussion on escalation and de-escalation techniques in the use of force.
- Lecture/discussion in the use of restraint techniques and their implications.
- Discussion of trespass laws and implications of enforcement.
- Completion of the Power to Arrest Training Manual Test with a 100% score in accordance with the Manual’s Administering
- Instructions. Train the student in BSIS Powers to Arrest procedures
Appropriate Use Of Force (AUOF) – 5 Hours

BSIS Appropriate Use Of Force – Only
This is only the 5 hour In- Person Appropriate Use Of Force portion of the Security Guard Regulation which is the BSIS update that took effect January 1st, 2024.

BSIS Mandatory Training
Course Cost: $40
Mandatory Classes required by the State of California
Every newly licensed or employed security guard shall complete two of the mandatory courses within thirty (30) days from the day the guard’s registration card is issued (8 hours) or the day the guard begins employment. The remaining two mandatory courses each consisting of four (4) hours of instruction, shall be completed within the first six (6) months from the day the guard registration card is issued or the day the guard begins employment as a security guard. Pursuant to Business and Professions Code Section 7583.6 (b) the following outline includes subjects that shall be taught and the maximum number of hours that will be credited for completion of each Mandatory Courses.

- Communication & It’s Significance – 4 hours
- Observation & Documentation – 4 hours
- Public Relations – 4 hours

BSIS Elective Training
Course Cost: $40
Elective Classes accepted by the State of California
Every newly licensed security guard shall complete a minimum of eight (8) hours of elective courses within thirty (30) days from the day the security guard’s registration card is issued or the day the guard begins employment. An additional eight (8) hours of elective courses shall be completed within the first six (6) months from the day the security guard’s registration card is issued or the day the guard begins employment. Pursuant to Business and Professions Code Section 7583.6 (b)

BSIS Exposed Carry Firearms Permit
Course Cost: $150 — ( 2 Day Class)
Firearms Livescan is $109.00
Become an armed guard by obtaining a BSIS exposed firearm permit. You may not carry a gun on duty without having been issued a Firearm Permit from the BSIS. Complete the Exposed Carry Firearms Course at our Bureau-approved firearm training facility and from a Bureau-approved firearm training instructor. Our instructors will also review with you the required application and documents that will need to be submitted to BSIS upon completion of the course, which will require you pass the written examination and range qualifications.

To be eligible for renewal, you must have completed four (4) range qualifications, completed four (4) use of force/de-escalation of force training courses, and passed the written Firearms Examination (at the time of your fourth qualification).

TASER

This course provides the basic operational theory and practical training for users to reasonably, safely, and effectively operate a TASER Conducted Electrical Weapon (CEW). This course will certify those who successfully complete it for a period of 2 years from the date of certification.

BSIS Baton Training
Initial Baton Course Cost: $100.00
Renewal Baton Course Cost: $60.00 (*Must not be expired & status must show “Current” in BSIS Breeze)

The baton can be a powerful non-lethal deterrent in the line of duty, but it can also be a deadly weapon. If you need to carry a baton on the job, you must learn how to use it properly- this could mean life or death for you or another person. Police Science Institute’s baton class will teach you everything you need to know about properly and legally carrying and using a baton. Upon completing the class and a passing test score, you will receive your Certification of Baton Qualification Training form and an application you must submit to the State of California BSIS.

Tear Gas / Pepper Spray
Course Cost: $40
Does your job require you to carry CN / CS Tear Gas or OC Pepper Spray? If so, California penal code requires you to complete training and obtain a license before you are legally allowed to carry pepper spray or tear gas on the job. Police Science Institute can fulfill these requirements by offering a Tear Gas / Pepper Spray class.
Some of the topics covered in this class are:
- Who may carry tear gas or pepper spray?
- Where are you allowed to and not allowed to carry it?
- When can you spray someone?
- What happens if i use it offensively?
- What liability do I assume?
- What is CN / CS / OC and how does it affect humans?
- What is OC and how does it differ from CN / CS?
- Proper storage, testing and handling of canisters
- Will it work equally on everyone?
- Spraying animals vs. spraying humans.
- What are the most effective tactics to use when spraying?
- How does various weather affect spraying?
- Psychological and Physiological effects on an attacker.
- When is it safer not to use it?
- Emergency treatment for accidental sprays.
Upon completion of this course and a score of 70% or better on the exam, you will be issued a Tear Gas and Pepper Spray Certification and become eligible to carry pepper spray and tear gas on the job.

SB 1626 School Security
Course Cost: $250 – (*Pre-Registration is Required) This is a 3-Day Class
With the passage of SB 1626 in 1998, state law requires security guards in K-12 school districts and California community college districts to complete a course of training developed by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS). The law took effect July 1, 2000, and affects guards working on school property for more than 20 hours per week. Police Science Institute is proud to offer this three day course pursuant to the passage of SB 1626.
IMPORTANT CHANGE IN THE LAW(SB 390)
As of July 1, 2021, every person involved in school security, even those that work less than 20-hours per week, will be required to take an SB1626 course in order to be eligible to work and be compliant in the State of California.
Upon completion of this course, students will receive a Certificate of Training and leave with knowledge of the following:
- Role and responsibility of a School Security Officer
- Laws and liability
- Security awareness in the educational environment
- Mediation and conflict resolution
- Disasters and emergencies
- Dynamics of student behavior
